| The Port of Oakland Public Art Committee requested that Hugh Livingston work with photographer Bruce Lynn on an installation for the lobby of the Port office building, on Water Street in Jack London Square facing the Bay. The installation was supported by the Clorox Foundation and Strings & Machines. It was installed in March 2005 and remained in the lobby through the end of the Port's Bayennale Arts Festival in August 2005. | The generous support of TTI allowed us complete access to the terminal, cranes and freightyard, where we documented the tremendous flow of energy which moves cargo in and out. All the sounds used in the composition originate with mechanical devices in use at the Port. Bruce's dramatic panoramic photographs provided context in the lobby installation for the experience of hearing the trucks, trains, boats and cranes move from one end of the room to the other. | The installation was contained in a toolbox, and was our first installation run from Apple's minimac, using Sonic Impact's 15W digital T-amps and an Emagic six-channel digital-to-analog convertor. See our equipment page for basic details on low-cost hardware solutions for real-time digital audio. |
