...a 16-channel overhead sound installation in Edgemar, a building designed by Frank Gehry in Santa Monica, California. Computer-controlled to cycle throughout the day based on tide level predictions for Santa Monica Municipal Pier. Each high tide washes in a handful of new sounds, a sort of musical driftwood. Each low tide carries a few away, gradually cycling the sonic components over the course of a month. LISTEN EDGEMAR was commissioned by developer Abby Sher, and was composed and created by Hugh Livingston and Michael Zbyzsynski, opening in 2004. A second generation update is being planned, with new instruments and speakers in more locations throughout the development.

In addition to the vibrant sounds of the environment surrounding the central courtyard at Edgemar, the installation features studio recordings of improvisations particularly for this space made by Pauline Oliveros, Philip Gelb, Jeremy Drake, Paul Livingstone, Jessica Catron and Vinny Golia.
LISTEN EDGEMAR is a permanent installation, utilizing Strings & Machines' custom spatialization software, can can be heard daily from 730am to 1130pm.
